Each week I will write about the world of sports...
•Mark Buehrle enjoyed a special moment when he threw a perfect game against my Tampa Bay Rays. He has to thank DeWayne Wise for saving the perfecto with an amazing catch, robbing Gabe Kapler of a home run in the ninth inning. Ozzie Guillen had to be proud because he put Wise in as a defensive improvement. Wow, Buehrle has a no-hitter and a perfect game to his credit! That's an impressive resume, my friends.
•I finally got to visit the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and I was very impressed. It is really a beautiful facility. I remember going to the old Yankee Stadium as a kid and it was always so special. I took my grandchildren and they had a blast. I encourage fans that have not been there yet to try to attend a game.
•Congratulations to Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice, as well as Tony Kubek for their induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Henderson was such an exciting player to watch, stealing bases and making things happen. Rice was a feared hitter with the Red Sox, and he did a great job playing the ball off of the Green Monster at Fenway. I loved listening to Kubek call the game of the week.
•Lance Armstrong made a solid run, but Alberto Contador was just too strong in the Tour de France. Armstrong had to be happy with his strong comeback, and a third-place finish is impressive considering the length of time he was away from the sport.
•This should be a wild week in baseball as the trade deadline approaches. Will Roy Halladay be dealt and which team will make the best effort to acquire the veteran pitcher from the Blue Jays? Which teams will be buyers in this market, and which will be sellers? It should be fun to watch as guys like Peter Gammons and Buster Olney love this time of season!
•With NFL training camps opening up, there are plenty of storylines to look ahead to as well. How will Terrell Owens fare in Buffalo? How will the Cowboys do without him? Will Brett Favre come back or will he retire for good? My friends, the NFL stays in the headlines almost all off-season, and I cannot wait for the regular season.
•The Western Conference improved even more over the weekend. Portland improved its point guard play by adding veteran Andre Miller. He should provide stability to a team that has a lot of young talent on the roster. The Spurs added veteran Theo Ratliff up front, and he will contribute to a team that also added Richard Jefferson in the off-season. Dallas made a solid pick-up by adding veteran Drew Gooden.
•The boxing world has been hit with three tragedies in a short period of time. The deaths of Alexis Arguello and Arturo Gatti, plus the latest shocker as former champion Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in an apparent carjacking incident. All three men gave their all in the ring, and all three passed away too soon. It is a sad, sad time for those who love that sport.
