END OF AN ERA IN SAN DIEGO
The Chargers released LaDainian Tomlinson on Monday, apparently ending his nine-season tenure in San Diego. Tomlinson scored 153 touchdowns in 141 games for the Chargers. Only two other players in NFL history have averaged a touchdown per game for one team in at least 50 games: Jim Brown for the Browns (126 TDs in 118 games) and Priest Holmes for the Chiefs (83 in 65 games).
HAYWOOD FILLING IN NICELY FOR DAMPIER
Brendan Haywood tied a career high with 20 rebounds for Dallas on Monday; he had 20 rebounds for the Wizards earlier this season. Haywood is the third player in the last 20 years to have a 20-rebound game for two teams in one season; Dikembe Mutombo did it for the Hawks and 76ers in the 2000-01 season and Olden Polynice did it for the Pistons and Kings in 1993-94.
Haywood and Erick Dampier, who has been sidelined with an injured finger for Dallas's last four games, are the first Mavericks teammates to have 20-rebound games in the same season since Shawn Bradley and Samaki Walker did it in the 1997-98 season.
HAWKS END JAZZ RUN
Atlanta's win in Utah snapped the Jazz's 15-game home winning streak against the Hawks. That had been the third-longest current home winning streak for one NBA team against another. The two longer streaks: San Antonio over Golden State (23) and Phoenix over Milwaukee (22). The Hawks' previous road win against the Jazz was on February 13, 1993.
NO "O" FOR D'ANT-NI ON MONDAY
The Knicks were held to 67 points by the Bucks on Monday, the third-lowest total by a team with Mike D'Antoni as head coach. The Nuggets scored 61 and 65 points in a pair of losses in March 1999 (D'Antoni's first season as an NBA head coach).
20/20 FOR BOGUT
Andruw Bogut had 24 points and 20 rebounds on Monday, making him only the second visiting player to have a 20/20 (points/rebounds) game at Madison Square Garden over the last 20 years. Dwight Howard has done it twice, in 2007 and 2009. Monday was the night that the Knicks honored their 1970 NBA Championship team and in attendance was the all-time leader in 20/20 games at MSG, Willis Reed, who had 14.
ANOTHER COMEBACK WIN FOR WIZARDS
The Wizards have won four games this month, and they've trailed by double digits in each game, including a win Monday over the Bulls. The Wizards hadn't come from at least 10 points down in four consecutive wins since March 2001.
DETROIT NETS DAMON
The Tigers signed Johnny Damon, who could fill the hole atop their batting order on Monday. The leadoff spot in the Tigers' batting order last season-mainly Curtis Granderson (130 starts) produced a .247 batting average and a .321 on-base percentage; that was the lowest batting average out of the leadoff spot for any American League team last season and it was the second-lowest OBP, slightly ahead of Oakland (.3205 to Detroit's .321 mark).
Damon has started 1,523 career games in the leadoff spot, most among active players.
