Terrorist attacks' effect on sporting world

The major postponements and cancellations caused by Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the sporting world:

Baseball

  • Major League Baseball postponed all games Tuesday through Sunday.

  • The International, Pacific Coast, California and New York-Penn leagues canceled the remainder of their championship series. Other leagues still in playoffs postponed games through Thursday.

    NFL

  • Called off all games for Week 2, 14 games scheduled for Sunday and the Monday night game.

    College football

  • Division I-A games scheduled for Thursday and Saturday have been postponed.

    Golf

  • The PGA Tour announced the World Golf Championship -- American Express Championship in St. Louis -- has been canceled, the first time in five years the PGA Tour has canceled a tournament. "It's pretty obvious, isn't it?" Ernie Els said as he carried his belongings to his car and tried to figure out how to get home to South Africa. "It's a good decision. This was the worst disaster ever. We can't go play a $5 million event."

  • The PGA's Tampa Bay Classic also was canceled Wednesday, updating a plan in which it was not going to start until Friday, with 36 holes played that day.

  • The PGA Tour on Wednesday canceled the Vantage Championship senior event in Clemmons, N.C.

  • The Buy.com Oregon Classic was canceled Wednesday by the PGA Tour after a day earlier planning for no play on Thursday, 18 holes on Friday, 18 on Saturday and 36 on Sunday.

  • The LPGA has canceled the Safeway Classic in Portland, Ore.

    Hockey

  • The National Hockey League announced that, in addition to the preseason games previously cancelled on Saturday, the games in North America scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 have also been cancelled. The regular slate of preseason games will now begin on Monday, Sept. 17.

  • The New York Rangers, who were scheduled to hold training camp at Madison Square Garden for the first time in their 76-year history beginning Wednesday, will participate in on-ice workouts at their practice facility, Playland Ice Casino, in Rye, N.Y., on Thursday and Friday. Further plans will be released at a later date.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that the team will remain in Toronto until at least Friday. The players will participate in on-ice workouts at Lake Shore Lions Arena on both Thursday and Friday. Travel information for the club's trip to St. John's has yet to be confirmed.

  • The Carolina Hurricanes will start their full training camp Friday at TECA Arena in Ft. Myers, Fla. Practice was to be held on Thursday for the 33 players who are in North Carolina at the RecZone in Raleigh at 8:30 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. ET. The 20 players in Florida will practice Thursday at TECA Arena at 10 a.m. ET.

  • The Buffalo Sabres, fearing delays at the Canadian border following Tuesday's attacks, postponed plans to open training camp at St. Catharines, Ont. Instead, the Sabres will open camp at their suburban-Buffalo practice facility Wednesday.

    Motor Sports

  • NASCAR has canceled Sunday's Winston Cup race in New Hampshire and the truck race at Texas Motor Speedway. Sunday's Indy Racing League's Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway was also canceled. The NHRA postponed this week's Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. The event has been rescheduled for the weekend of October 4-7.

    Soccer

  • The U.S. national women's soccer game against Japan in the Nike Cup, scheduled to held in Chicago on Tuesday, has also reportedly been cancelled.

  • Major League Soccer canceled the rest of its regular season.

  • The governing body of European soccer said this week's games are postponed. The FIFA World Cup qualifying games will go on as planned.

    Boxing

  • The undisputed middleweight title fight between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins, scheduled for Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York, was postponed. No makeup date has been announced.

    Other college sports

  • The Atlantic Coast Conference postponed all events through Thursday.

  • The Big West Conference postponed all events through Thursday and any events involving air travel through Saturday.

  • The Big East and Pac-10 postponed all conference competition through the weekend.

  • The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference postponed all competition involving members through Sunday.

    Horse racing

  • The Thoroughbred Racing Association canceled all its cards Tuesday, and Wednesday's racing was called off at Arlington Park, Pimlico Race Course and Turfway Park.

  • Belmont Park and Yonkers Raceway, both in New York, called off their cards through Friday.

    Other international events

  • The Indian government indefinitely postponed the inaugural Afro-Asian Games scheduled to be held in the New Dehli, Nov. 3-11.

  • The Romanian government has declared a day of mourning, so the Gelsor Open tennis tournament won't be played on Friday.
