White Sox ace
Mark Buehrle:

Faced minimum 27 batters, which is *totally* underrated, and -- for my money -- nearly as good as a no-hitter, without all the hoo-hah.

"Eye on the Ball(ot)"

Has a nicer ring than "Vote or Die," doesn't it? Inspired by:

*P. Diddy's new voter-registration campaign ...

*Convention season, the College GameDay of politics ...

*BCS fan-vote mania ...

*And ABCNews.com's "The Note"

I am officially kicking off a 90-plus day drive to encourage Quickie readers to be sure to register and vote -- if you think that voting for MLB All-Stars is satisfying, you will learn a new meaning of "This Time It Counts," no matter who you would support.

See what happens on the slow days, friends?

'Sheed Cashes In
Rasheed Wallace's presence was the biggest reason for the Pistons' championship surge (and his modest stats make it all the more remarkable), so locking him up for five more years (mere $57 million) should ensure that Detroit is a contender in the East through the end of the decade. Now, if only he could tutor Darko ...

Benson Watch
While Big Unit waffles, Pirates ace Kris Benson has emerged as the hottest name on the trade front. Solid audition last night: 8 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB.

Don't know why he hasn't gotten more pub, but I know this: The contender that trades for him will still be playing in mid-October.

Mountain Lance
If you missed Wednesday's Tour de Lance stage up L'Alpe d'Huez (that's French for "big-ass hill"),

CHECK OUT THE QUICKIE EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING!
WHO'S GOT THE MOMENTUM ...
Jake Peavy, Padres: 8 IP, 1 R: ERA drops to 2.25
Francisco Cordero: Texas closer gets 30th save (1.91 ERA)
Dave Gavitt: Better job than chairing "Maui Invitational?"
... AND WHO'S GOT NO MO'
D-Backs: Have lost 10 in a row; hit "Unit-eject" button!
German fans: Spitting on Lance? Where's our retribution?
Jeopardy's Ken Jennings: National opinion turning on him

you missed some of the most riveting sports you will see all year.

The fan participation (or, if you like, obstruction) is literally inches from the riders at all times, as they tried to deal with the nastiest incline of the entire Tour. Find the highlights to see why people worship Lance, who consumed the mountain and all but clinched his sixth straight title.

NBA, Meet VORP
Always fun to apply SABR concepts to other sports, because it happens so rarely. But here's one, inspired by Brian Kenny from ESPNews' "Hot List" yesterday:

VORP: Value Over Replacement Player. It means how much better (or worse) your team is with one player than if they had minimum-ability player instead. So how does this apply to the NBA?

Chill out, Nets critics: K-Mart (15.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg career average) isn't so irreplaceable if they can land Shareef Abdur-Rahim (20.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg career).

Raiders Rule
Oakland is No. 1 in licensed NFL merchandise (a.k.a.: the jersey and other crap that you, once well past your teen years, have no business wearing).

I Love the '90s? It's as if the NWA-inspired "Raiders chic" look is the only thing from that decade to retain its marketability. (See Big 5 for the Top 5 teams in merch sales.)

Anaheim Angels:
A month ago, they were the faves in the AL West; now, have lost 4 straight and are season-high 6 out of first. Vlad MVP? No mo'.
