The Lead Item
Two Words For You:
ELECTION.  DAY.

Make sure you head to the real voting booths today and then join in the fun with the Page 2/SportsNation election.

Some of the issues on our ballot with some Quickie thoughts:

College football playoff: BCS or 8-team playoff? Hey, BCS works if people would just trust the computers.

World Series home field: Determined by All-Star Game? An absolutely stupid idea.

20-year-old age limit? Only if NBA, NFL fund their own minor leagues.

8 p.m. ET start time: For all major playoff games? Read my lips: ain't gonna happen.

MLB instant replay: Yes, for plays on the bases and HR calls.

For more issues and to place your vote, see the link in Q it Up.

BCS Standings
Big winner: Cal, which jumps four spots to No. 4, and could be in line for an Orange Bowl rematch with USC.

Big loser: No. 3 Auburn, which likely needs a loss by USC or Oklahoma to reach the national title game.

Bigger loser: Utah, which is sixth, but barely holding off Texas for the final automatic BCS berth.

NBA Tips Off
Three games tonight:

Houston at Detroit (TNT): Title goes through Detroit, but we're all curious to see how T-Mac and Yao will play together.

Sacto at Dallas: New-look Mavs turned over much of roster; but will their D be any better?

Denver at Lakers (TNT): It's Kobe's show now. Prediction: 33 points per game this year.

Kidd Out; Shaq?
Jason Kidd, who just started running Monday, starts season on DL after offseason knee surgery.

WHO'S GOT THE MOMENTUM ...
Wally Backman: Hired as Diamondbacks manager
Devin Harris: Named Mavs' starting PG over Jason Terry
Jim Bowden: From Cold Pizza to big-league GM!
... AND WHO'S GOT NO MO'
Dolphins: Even the D is getting torched now
Rafael Furcal: Released after 21-day jail sentence
Jim Bowden: Job not expected to be permanent

Nets have no timetable on his return, and coach Lawrence Frank described the situation as a long process.

Shaq may also miss Wednesday's Nets-Heat opener, with a touchy hammy. Wasn't his weight loss supposed to make him healthier? Pencil him now for his usual 15 games missed.

Spree: Trade Me
Gotta love a 34-year-old demanding a contract extension or a trade "Insulting"? The only insulting thing is a guy set to make $14.6 million this year who doesn't have his mind on winning a championship for the Timberwolves.

Bettman Speaks
And in a shocking development, the NHL commissioner says the season may be over!

"The season is likely slipping away," he told TSN. "I say this -- and I hate when I say it, we lose less money when we are not playing."

Meanwhile, player reps are scheduled to meet Tuesday in Toronto.

A collective nation holds its breath -- and it's not the United States.

They Weren't Drunk
Kevin Millar loves to talk, but wishes now he would have shut his trap.

The Red Sox first baseman admitted on Fox's "Best Damn Sports Show" that Red Sox players took a shot of Jack Daniel's before Game 6 of the ALCS and did it before each game of the World Series.

"It's not a story about 25 shot glasses," Millar told Peter Gammons. "it's one small Gatorade cup that we shared as a symbol."

Keyshawn Johnson:
Upset over sideline report, suggests Pam Oliver needs a spanking. Bottom line: at least TO produces.
