Matt Clement:
Red Sox pitcher released from hospital and expected to
be fine. Promising end to the scariest video of the
season.

The Lead Item
Two Words For You:
FAST. FORWARD.
Larry Brown is all about instant
impact. So to commemorate his signing today, let's
forecast how the Knicks look in, say, three years.
It's July 2008:
Brown might be retiring, but it's a drama being
strung out in the New York tabloids and being
orchestrated, as usual, by Brown himself.
Isiah is long gone, having been forced out in a
showdown with Brown in the middle of the 2005-06
season. Brown has been de facto team prez.
While the rest of the league ran to embrace the
renaissance of run-'n'-gun play, Brown thought his best
chance to win now would be to have the Knicks slow it
down and slug it out.
The Knicks finally made the playoffs, for the
first time in Brown's three years as head coach. Of
course, they were promptly swept.
The roster is purged of big contracts like
Marbury's and Crawford's, but mediocre finishes left
the team with mediocre draft picks.
(That's OK: Brown has consistently shipped his
rookies down to the NBDL for the maximum two years.
Then they sit on his bench in New York.)
Free agent LeBron James sees even less promise
in New York than he does in Cleveland, which has yet
to make it out of the East semis.
That leaves LeBron with no choice but to sign with
buddy Jay-Z and the new Brooklyn Nets across the
river, and to an inevitable conclusion...
Brown eyes Brooklyn, his hometown. Wait:
Haven't you heard? It's always been Brown's dream to
bring a championship there...
MLB Wrap
K. Rogers loses appeal: Like you
thought Selig would reduce his previous 20-game
suspension? Sit down and be quiet, Kenny.
Hideo Nomo in NY: Can't possibly be Yankees'
pitching "big fix," can it? Makes you long for the
days of short-sighted deals for big names.
Nomar makes debut: Didn't exactly set Peoria on
fire (1-4), but did knock in two runs with his one
hit. Cubs could use that.
Trades: Quiet... too quiet...

SEC Media Days
Steve Spurrier is the star, but no one
really expects South Carolina to contend for the SEC
title this season.
Spurrier rival Phil Fulmer and Tennessee are a safe
pick, but Urban Meyer's offseason at Florida is a
study in organizational transformation.
Watch the Gators, behind Heisman-ish QB and SEC MVP
Chris Leak. The SEC Game of the Year, as usual, comes
early: Tennessee at Florida on Sept. 17.

Drew Rosen-who?
The battle between NFL agent and NFL
team has been won, and it's Drew Rosenhaus who seems
to need the CPR.
Despite a lot of offseason blather, Packers WR Javon
Walker arrived at Packers camp yesterday. (T.O. is
expected to go to Eagles camp, too.)
The agent's new strategy is "bend-don't-break," as
opposed to "I must break you." Rosenhaus gets a bad
rap; he smartly advised his guys to show.

Impressions of Mississippi:
Manning Country: The speed limit down the main
stretch of Ole Miss campus is Archie's jersey. Give credit
to Eli for succeeding under that legacy.
Cradle of Favre: Played high school in Kiln,
then moved on to Southern Miss. If not for Archie,
could be the favorite son of the state.
Small-College Stars: Produced the best pair of
WR-RB talent of any state: Rice at Miss. Valley St. and
Payton at Jackson St.

Nationals:
No more mo: Live by one-run games, die by one-run
games. 2nd straight 1-run L couldn't come at worse
time (um, now) or to worse foe (ATL).

Sosa socks No. 587: Breaks tie with Frank Robinson on
all-time list. More relevantly, it's Sosa's 3rd HR in
the last 4 games.
You know it's a slow MLB trade-deadline week when the
hottest names are left-handed middle relievers (SF's
Eyre, CLE's Sauerbeck, MIN's Romero)
NBA Free: Juan Dixon jumps from Wiz to Blazers, where
his shoot-first mentality will fill the gap left by
Stoudamire. Is that a good thing?
SportsNation: 55 percent of fans think so highly of
Larry Brown that they say the Knicks will make the
playoffs next season.
Movie Watch: Saw "Hustle and Flow" the other day, and
it's as entertaining as all the buzz says it
is.
Today's must-read is Insider's coverage of NFL
Training Camps, starting with the Falcons. Len P. has
harsh words (like "brutal") about Mike Vick.
