The Lead Item
Two Words For You:
TENDING.  BUSINESS.

Pistons fans say "game-winning layup." Sixers fans say "game-losing goaltending." Tomayto, tomahto.

Don't blame Derrick Coleman. It was Chucky Atkins' night and his shot was going in anyway (20 replays courtesy of girlfriend-alienating TiVo). AI's 5-for-25 FG shooting was awfully justifiable; his role is to keep jacking 'em up. Dish responsibility where it's due: frontcourt duds Keith Van Horn and Kenny Thomas combined to miss 16 of 22 shots, and the refs missed an egregious Pistons traveling violation late.

Must-Win Games
FYI, not entertaining any idea that the Lakers dynasty ends tonight: Even fans in Texas can't believe that the Spurs will be winning in L.A. (or, for that matter, the Mavs winning in Sacramento). The two big things to watch, then: (1) Injuries that might affect Game 7 and (2) where the teams are psychologically coming out of the game.

Another Mighty Shutout
This Jiggy situation is past absurd: After the Anaheim goalie delivered his third shutout in three games -- this time in front of a rowdy, Fowl Towel-waving home crowd -- the question is not whether or not the Wild can win this series, but whether or not they'll score in Game 4.

Annika Watch
"If all the stars are lined up right," Annika said she "believes" she can win the Colonial, a statement that must have had golf misogynists rolling. But here's something that might wipe the smirk off their faces: If the Colonial's TV ratings are huge, expect ROI-greedy sponsors to use a lot more future exemptions on LPGA players.

Forecast for 2013
When 13-year-old phenom Michelle Wie was asked

"EVER BEEN CALLED FOR GOALTENDING ON A DATE?" EDITION
THE SET-UP: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS WEEKEND
1 Spurs at Lakers (Game 6): L.A. must win, will win
2 Mavs at Kings (Game 6): Ditto for Sacramento
3 Senators at Devils (Game 3): Time to put O in Ottawa
THE SIT-DOWN: RETIRE THESE CONVERSATION TOPICS
1 Has Curt Schilling lost it? Nah: 14 K's yesterday
2 Are Expos for real? Yeah: Just swept the Giants (in SF)
3 Ainge dumping Walker, O'Brien: Says they're part of plan

yesterday about golf's ongoing battle of the sexes, she commented in USA Today that someday she'd "like to play half and half" -- as in half her schedule on the LPGA tour and half with the PGA. Considering she's better than any male player was at her age, 10 years from now the idea is not far-fetched.

Big East Fights Back
The Big East's counter-poach should take into account the ACC's emerging pressure point: If it don't include Virginia Tech in the expansion package, in-state buddy UVA could neg the changes, which gained league approval by a single vote.

So here's an irony: The Big East should actually be pushing the ACC to try to take the trio of Miami, 'Cuse and BC, because the process gets pokey if the ACC doesn't take the Hokies.

Fellowship of the Ring
My precious? Hardly. Incredibly, the NCAA allows players to sell

their championship rings -- as long as players don't receive more than original fair-market value ... so buried in yesterday's ruling declaring nine ring-selling Georgia football players ineligible is that they must have sold their SEC '02 title jewelry at a mark-up. Who else wants to know: How much?

Dave DeBusschere, 62
For a generation of fans too young to have known him as a player, DeBusschere will be remembered as the giddy face at the NBA's '85 "Ewing" draft lottery, representing his Knicks at their moment of greatest excitement since the title teams of his heyday.

Anna Kournikova:
As top seed in Charlottesvillve, Va., tournament, lost last night in first round to rookie ranked No. 384. Bring on the French Open!
