Braves SS Rafael Furcal:
An unassisted triple-play is like a late-night bar
hook-up: Not quite sure what's happening, over before
you know it, then wild cheering by spectators.

The Lead Item
Two Words For You:
PREMATURE. PRESEASON.
You may not be able to learn anything from
NFL preseason, but you sure can make a couple
preposterously premature observations:
* Mike Martz should be dismissed for even
having a competition between
wince-while-watching Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger.
* The Cowboys will lose a dozen games this year --
but how about that great new attitude!
* Bengals franchise-saving rookie QB Carson Palmer
sparked enthusiasm by throwing more TDs for the other
team than his own. (But that's not premature; in
Cincinnati, they call that "predestined.")
K-Mart Shopping
Trouble for both sides in the Kenyon
Martin contract squabble: Martin wouldn't be
nearly as good without Kidd, but the Nets wouldn't be
nearly as good without K-Mart.
"Pay me the max or trade me" is not
negotiating: Kenyon doesn't deserve the max, but
why not give him the chance to earn it in bonuses if
the team wins the title.
Sorry Shockey
Apologetic Jeremy Shockey needs one of
Queer Eye's "make-betters." (Certainly some
sensitivity training.) But after Friday's press
pile-on, let's not make a complete crush-to-judgment.
In a sport where much of the fun is regulated out,
there has to be a way to channel the positive parts of
his enthusiasm (like calling out an overly worshipped
coach).

BLISSY! YOU GOT SOME EXPLAINING TO DO! |
|
| THE SET-UP: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY |
1 Eagles at Saints. How will N.O. blow it this time? (ESPN, 8 ET)
2 Red Sox at A's: Pedro vs. Tim Hudson a sick matchup
3 Dodgers at Marlins: Dontrelle as must-see as Pedro |
| THE SIT-DOWN: DROP THESE FROM YOUR HOT LIST |
1 Anaheim Angels: No Rally Monkey can help the team now
2 NBA retro jerseys (AI's USA jersey will rule the summer)
3 Baylor hoops: Wait, was Bears basketball EVER hot? |

because he wanted to help the Rangers get back to .500.
Right, ha ha ... so what's the real reason?
About Schmidt
The Giants keep winning the arms race:
Even without star pitcher Jason Schmidt (scratched Sunday with elbow tendinitis), fill-in Kevin Correia won his first major-league start.
Meanwhile: The White Sox' Esteban Loaiza may be a
one-season wonder, but he made a huge Cy Young
statement by outdueling previously untouchable A's
rookie Rich Harden.
USA Hoops
On the first day of USA hoops practice, Allen
Iverson said he's representing "a lot of people in all
different countries that have flaws and made
mistakes." Good thing Kobe's not around, or they'd be
fighting for positioning, as well as shots.

Checking Odom-eter
Lamar Odom apparently figures that if he
disses the Clippers enough, they'll let him escape to
the Heat. The real insult will be his injury
when L.A. forces him to stay by matching Miami's offer
sheet.
PGA Championship
If you could only have one season of PGA
glory, would you rather top the money list or win
a major? While you think about that, Davis Love III
might do both. Add him to the mix of PGA Championship
contenders later this week; he won the International on
Sunday, his fourth win of the year.

Yankees bullpen:
Take your pick, mix 'n match, play 'em all or just use one: If New York doesn't win the Series this year, brutal 'pen will have played a part.
