Bill Clinton:

Took in Giants-Mets game. Here's a pure pol's take on AL East: "Boston is playing real good, but the Yankees are so tough to beat." Everyone wins.

The Lead Item
Two Words For You:
SPLINTERED.  SOMETHING.

Explain this one: How does decapitation fit in to cryogenics' whole "we're going to freeze you for a while, then bring you back to life when medical science has advanced that far" thing?

Not only has frozen Ted Williams' head been removed, according to a report in this week's SI, but eight samples of his DNA are missing. Conspiracy theorists (surely some crossover with cryogenics fans) may note that it would take exactly eight fielders to put together a Williams-clone super-team. Won't help the Red Sox' pitching problems, though.

Kobe Fliers
Unquestionably, it is supremely disturbing that white supremacists put racist fliers on windshields and lawns in Eagle, Colo.

But here's something questionable: That the Eagle Co. sheriff department's initial reaction was to say that the fliers (which said "Don't have sex with blacks") had no connection to the Kobe case, a ridiculous reaction that will only ratchet the racial tension.

NL Wild Card
Good seats on the Marlins bandwagon going fast: Florida had a classic "it's one of those magic seasons" wins last night, beating the Dodgers in 13 innings on a home run by the backup catcher's backup (Ramon Castro) to take the NL wild-card lead.

AL Wild Card
Welcome back to the win column, Barry Zito. But it took Keith Foulke's clutch relief to get three saves for the price of one: the A's 5-3 lead over the Red Sox, Zito's desperately needed win and Oakland's chance to nudge past Boston for the AL wild-card spot.

THE SET-UP: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY
1 Yankees at Royals: Is this a playoff preview?
2 Red Sox at Oakland: Wild-ly important head-to-head
3 FIFA Under-17 Championships: Freddy Adu vs. World
THE SIT-DOWN: DROP THESE FROM YOUR HOT LIST
1 Roy Halladay: Lost for second time in last three starts
2 Piazza as catcher: May return to Mets today; 1B next?
3 PGA Championship "favorites": If Rich Beem can win it ...

Pujols Watch
Extended his hit streak to 26 games with a 1st-inning HR. Forget the streak's significance (ties MLB's top streak this season, Cards' longest since '71); this is the high-profile run to draw Pujols even with Bonds in a highly entertaining NL MVP race.

Speaking of Barry: He hit 2 HR (649,650) in front of Clinton at Shea. Legend status is when fans stop counting your homers in a season and just concentrate on eye-popping career totals.

Ohio State Shares
Was there actually an era when colleges and the NCAA were adversarial? Now schools prostrate to stay in NCAA good graces (there's prison lingo for that). OSU happily turned over Clarett investigation findings, and the Buckeyes will get off trouble-free. Can't say the same about Maurice.

Pete Rose
Even more ridiculous than letting Rose back into baseball (and, if you believe MLB, even more ridiculous than reports about Rose being let back into baseball) is staging the process over a few years. Either reinstate or don't; the last thing this issue needs is more muddling.

Halls of Justice
One more "explain this one": How does the NASCAR nut who spammed Fox get six months of home detention, but the ump-attacking lunatic get only probation?

Rod Strickland:
House burgled, game-worn jersey collection stolen. Robbers found Strickland's commitment swiped in early '90s.
