We tend to think of the Bruins as conservative and traditional. It's the Wooden effect. It's the wire-rim glasses and the rolled-up program. But the truth is, the UCLA dynasty teams were aggressive, fast-paced running clubs. They pressed and pushed, they tired their opponents out. "Our conditioning was our real advantage," Bill Walton told me a few weeks back. "UCLA practices were the most intense physical experiences of my life." So they go small and quick against the Hoosiers, Baron pressuring Isiah from end line to end line, Marques Johnson and Sidney Wicks sprinting by Scott May and George McGinnis. Walton is in, but only as a fast-break catalyst: rebound and outlet. Alcindor is in, but his main job is a sniper on the fast break, sky-hooking off Davis' drives-and-dishes. Isiah is Isiah; he keeps pace, scores in transition, hits improbable fadeaway jumpers. But the rest of his boys are sucking wind. Final score: UCLA 99, Indiana 81

Walt Bellamy, at 6-foot-11, knew he was going to have his hands full in this one. But in his coach's "inspirational" words, he found … inspiration. Though not enough to stop Lew Kareem Abdul-Alcindor Jabbar from scoring 30 points by halftime. The yelling, screaming and perfectly placed profanity used in the locker room by coach Knight did nothing to enhance the Hoosiers' chances in the second half. Although Isiah Thomas and Scott May played big, UCLA was just too big (Walton: 29 points, 17 rebounds) down the stretch. At the end of the Hoosiers' bench sat a player who, because of NCAA rules, couldn't play in the tournament for them -- but he would have made the difference. But "technically" Larry Joe Bird never played for IU, although he did attend school there for a year. Final score: UCLA 115, Indiana 98
