By David Nielsen Scripps Howard News Service The last time the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers met in the NBA Finals, the "Bad Boy" Pistons swept the "Showtime" Lakers, 4-0, in 1989. Just one of the 36 celebrities contacted by Scripps Howard and NBA Entertainment predicted a Detroit sweep this time around. In fact, only nine celebrities think that the underdog Pistons can knock off the powerful Lakers. The NBA Finals begin at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday in Los Angeles. The results of the Scripps Howard Celebrity NBA Finals Poll: KID ROCK, rock star: Pistons in four. Detroit is the real deal. We are everything Hollywood wants to be. MARION JONES, Olympic champion sprinter: Los Angeles Lakers, because I am a Lakers fan from birth, and they are the best!!!
KERRY WOOD, Chicago Cubs pitcher: Detroit Pistons. I like their style of play. Time for someone besides the Lakers to win. SNOOP DOGG, actor/rapper: Lakers are going to win it all because Snoop Dogg says so. ANDY RODDICK, tennis star: If Detroit's defense is up to the task of containing L.A.'s offense, I love their chances in a long series. HALEY JOEL OSMENT, actor who has correctly picked the last five Super Bowl winners: Lakers in five. DAVID ARQUETTE, actor: Lakers in five. Close games but Shaq will prevail over Ben, and Kobe will outshine Hamilton. Rasheed is going to be hot and cold. DAVID TIDMARSH, 2004 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion: The Lakers. PENNY MARSHALL, director: I really don't know the Pistons except for Rasheed, whom I love. The Lakers will win. They match up better. MARK MCGRATH, "Sugar Ray" lead singer: Lakers in five. They will have at least one meltdown to keep them interested, but otherwise, L.A. has too much firepower. PLACIDO DOMINGO, opera star: Los Angeles Lakers. IAN ZIERING, actor, "Beverly Hills 90210": Games 1 and 2 to the Lakers, 3 to the Pistons, 4 and 5 to the Lakers. ICE CUBE, actor/rapper: Lakers in six. Lakers will lose two on purpose just to win the title at the Staples Center. BOB WEIR, Grateful Dead guitarist: Lakers in six. Dr. JOYCE BROTHERS, psychologist: I take the Lakers because I've been absolutely astounded that Kobe Bryant is so resilient, that he is able to go when his life is at stake then take a flight and some of what he's done has been just seven minutes or thereabouts after he's arrived. He's so resilient and so able to bounce back. It's a very special ability and I think that ability will carry the whole team. KWAME M. KILPATRICK, Mayor of Detroit: The Detroit Pistons will win in six. With a 2-3-2 format, I believe that the Pistons will steal one in L.A., win two at home and go back to L.A. and win to everyone's surprise. SEN. CARL LEVIN, (D-Mich.): Pistons in seven. SUSAN ANTON, singer/actress: I have been a fan of the Lakers since the days of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. I delighted along with all of L.A. when Magic and Kareem brought "Showtime" to the Forum, so it will come as no surprise that I am going 100 percent with the Lakers! Most likely a sweep because now that the team is playing like a team there is just too much talent for the Pistons to battle against. Bravo to Larry Brown, Rasheed Wallace and all the Pistons on getting to the championship, but sorry boys. The road to the NBA crown is paved with Lakers purple and gold. As Chick would say "the butter is hard and the Jell-O is jiggling."
MISS AMERICA 2004 ERICKA DUNLAP: The Lakers are going to win because Shaq won't have it any other way. BILL O'REILLY, Fox News host: Lakers in seven. (Why?) Shaquille O'Neal. PAULA ZAHN, CNN host: The Lakers in six. Detroit can't match its offense. And, although Detroit's defense is outstanding, they will not be able to contain Shaq and Kobe for the duration of the series. JEFF BURTON, NASCAR driver: They are both strong teams but the Lakers look to be better. Lakers win in six games. ELLIOTT SADLER, NASCAR driver: L.A. is a tough team to beat and would probably be considered an all-star team. Shaq is unstoppable and the support cast he has around him would be MVP's for most other teams around the league. I think the Lakers will win the series 4-2, but I really hope Detroit can make it interesting. RUSTY WALLACE, NASCAR driver: Are you kidding? The Lakers are as strong as the 48 car (driven by race winner Jimmie Johnson) was at Charlotte. They just have way too much depth and are really in a league of their own. I see it Lakers in six, though. Hey, the Pistons have two guys named Wallace, so you have to give them some respect. I really see Ben Wallace having two real big games and that will be the highlight for Detroit. KEVIN HARVICK, NASCAR driver: The Lakers are just too dominant and should be able to take it in four games. CHARLES ROGERS, Detroit Lions wide receiver: Pistons in six. The "Bad Boys" are back. They're younger and hungrier (than the Lakers). STACY DRAGILA, Olympic champion pole vaulter: Detroit Pistons in six games, because of their defense. MIKE POWELL, world record holder, long jump: Lakers in five. Even though Detroit has a solid defense, they have no answer for Shaq and no answer for Kobe. I think it will go five, but if the Lakers take Detroit seriously enough, they should sweep them. If they don't take it seriously enough from the start, it may take six games. JAMES BLAKE, tennis star: Lakers in five, because I want Phil Jackson to beat Red Auerbach's record. MATHEW ST. PATRICK, actor, "Six Feet Under": Lakers will take the championship in five but they might stretch it out to six for advertisement purposes. The Lakers have more experience and when it's down to the wire, even the bench players step up their game. SEAN PATRICK THOMAS, actor, "Barbershop": Pistons in seven games. Ben Wallace will shut down Shaq, and Rip Hamilton will harass Kobe. Plus, the Pistons have a deeper bench. Kareem Rush will never again be as lucky as he was against the T-Wolves. ALISON SWEENEY, actress, "Days of Our Lives": Lakers in five. As much as I like Ben Wallace, there's no way he'll stop Shaq. I'm not predicting a sweep because the Lakers (except Karl Malone, who always plays hungry) occasionally 'forget' they're trying to win a championship. BLAIR UNDERWOOD, actor, "LAX": The Lakers, because when they work in unison, they are unstoppable and unbeatable. ANTHONY ANDERSON, actor, "Big Momma's House": The Lakers will win in six games. The Pistons have no one to guard Shaq. A couple of players will be suspended for fighting only hurting the Pistons chances. JAMES LESURE, actor, "Las Vegas": Pistons in six! They're going to shock the basketball world, because ... because ... because... they're my last hope. ARIES SPEARS, actor, "Mad TV": If Kobe makes a trip to Colorado, it's the Lakers in four.
