Woo Wins!
By Andrew FeldmanIf your nickname was "The Magnificent," wouldn't it be time for you to win a bracelet in the second-largest preliminary event of 2008? David "The Magnificent" Woo outlasted the field of 2,720 players to win his first bracelet and $631,550.
Woo, a professional poker player from Atlanta, Georgia, has been playing poker full-time for the last five years. Previously, he owned a coffee shop, but changed his ways after taking up poker. To date, he has four WSOP cashes including two final tables. His best finish was fifth in Event 27 of 2007, another $1,500 no-limit hold 'em event.
"Every time I play poker is a learning experience," Woo said afterward. "I would have been sick with anything less than first place. I really expected to win."
Woo defeated Matthew Wood for the bracelet, but perhaps the most notable name at the final table was Thom Werthmann who won the $1,500 pot-limit Omaha championship in 2005. Werthmann was eliminated in fifth place in an interested three-way all-in hand. On a board of Q-J-10, the action was four handed postflop. After Werthmann led out, Woo called and Curtis Early (holding K-Q) moved in over the top. Werthmann then moved all-in as well with Q-J and Woo, holding A-K for the nut straight, made the call. After two blanks, both players were eliminated and Woo held a sizeable chip advantage.
Other notable finishers include Minh Nguyen (24th), Adam Levy (74th) and Joe Tehan (89th).
