A hockey pro … a baseball player … what sport will produce the next WSOP winner? Basketball?

After former professional hockey player Greg Mueller won his first bracelet in Event 33, a former collegiate athlete won his first bracelet in Event 34. Eric Baldwin, a 26-year-old professional poker player, defeated a field of 2,095 Thursday night to win his first bracelet and his seventh World Series of Poker cash.

IMPDI 2009Former college baseball player Eric Baldwin won his first bracelet in Event 34 at the 2009 WSOP.

Baldwin played right field for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, a team that won the Division 3 National Championship in 2005, but this title paid off a little bit better with $521,991 in first-place prize money.

"I'm head over heels," Baldwin said. "It's far above anything else that I have ever done. I can't even talk about it accurately right now because it hasn't sunk in yet."

A Henderson, Nev., resident, Baldwin primarily plays live, and has had some recent success on the felt with multiple hundred thousand dollar cashes at the Venetian and Bellagio. The winnings from Event 34 are the highest of his career, and it seems Baldwin has some entertaining ways to spend the cash.

"One of my friends told me that if I ever cash for more than a quarter-million I have to buy an old-junk used car, and then throw $10,000 rims on it," he said. "I hope he does not make me do it. But if he does, I am probably going to go out and buy an old Cutless [Oldsmobile] or something like that, and put some rims on it."

With leftover money, Baldwin said he might start to market himself to one of the WSOP's official sponsors, Miller Brewing Company, and hopefully, get himself one step closer to his dream … of free beer.

"My dream is to be sponsored by Miller Lite," Baldwin said. "That's kind of a joke, but I like to drink Miller Lite. I want to throw that out there. If Miller Lite needs a guy in the poker world, just give me a free supply, and we're golden."

It might be a great investment for the Miller Brewing Company. At 26 and with a bracelet on his wrist, Baldwin's career has just begun.

Other notable finishers included Roland De Wolfe (fifth), Bertrand Grospellier (13th) and Phil Hellmuth (113th).
