Seniors event sets WSOP Record
By Andrew FeldmanOver the last few years the WSOP has noticed an increase in the attendance during the Seniors Event. Anyone over the age of 50 is eligible today and in 2009, a record-field of 2,707 players paid $1,000 to play in the World Series of Poker. To many in the field, the champion Michael T. Davis, is a "youngin'." The 58-year-old retired home inspector from Dubuque, Iowa plays regularly at his local casinos and showed off his ability two years in a row in this event.
In 2008, Davis finished 115th out of the 2,218 entrants. Earning just a few thousand for that finish, he had something to prove in 2009.
"I decided I am not getting any younger," said Davis to the WSOP. "I have to make my yearly pilgrimage to play in the senior event. I might even play in another event or two. (Laughing and smiling) Who knows?"
The Seniors event first appeared on the WSOP schedule in 2001. Since then, the fields have year over year including a 22 percent increase over 2008. Davis earned $437,358 for first place which was the largest cash prize ever won in any senior event.
"What can I say? I feel that I got lucky hitting some cards," he said. "There were some superb players. I had fun the entire time -- every table I was at. I had a ball. I want to thank everybody out here."
Davis recently sold his business and had plans to move out to Las Vegas to be closer to his daughter. With an extra couple hundred thousand in his pocket, something tells me the move away from Dubuque might be a little easier.
Other notable finishers included Gioi Loung (23rd), Barbara Enright (76th) and Berry Johnston (185th)
