Gee turns $1,000 into $472,479
The second $1,000 event of the WSOP attracted a 3,042-player field consisting of mostly amateurs looking to strike it big. Steve Gee wasn't just another player in the field, however, as the poker veteran took down his first bracelet and earned $472,479 in the process. The Sacramento, Calif., native defeated Matt Vance to wrap up the five-day tournament.

Gee has been playing poker for more than 30 years, spending his time in the California casinos primarily playing lowball. He transitioned into hold 'em after working a "regular" job in the late 1980s as a software developer, but decided that poker was his true passion. Gee only played cash games until five years ago when he attempted tournament poker. This was his first WSOP final table.
"When I first started playing, there was no online poker or videos," said Gee. "I learned from the school of hard knocks. I put in my time. It's really big [to win]. It's not that I'm insecure. I'm very secure about what I do, but this is a validation if you are a poker player. The thing about poker today is that no matter how good you are in cash games, even if you crush the games, nobody knows who you are. The tournament players are the rock stars today. So, this is what you do if you want to be known and get validation for what you do as a poker player."
A wide variety of talented players occupied the seats at the Event 13 final table. Jared "thewacokidd" Hamby finished eighth for $46,077. He has 10 WSOP cashes including two main-event cashes in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, Hamby earned $1.3 million primarily due to a second-place finish on the World Poker Tour. David Baker made his 23rd WSOP cash with his third-place finish and earned $206,813. Baker has over $1 million in career earnings as well. Vance's second-place finish was notable, as it was his third cash in three huge WSOP fields this year. While the first two cashes were only for a couple thousand dollars, this payday was much more significant, as he'll be taking home $292,232.
Other notable finishers from Event 13 include Carl Olson (28th), Andy Black (32nd) and Ylon Schwartz (34th). This was Schwartz's third cash of the WSOP.
