Scott Montgomery wins first bracelet

Over the last few years, Scott Montgomery received a lot of air time on ESPN's broadcasts of the World Series of Poker. His fifth place finish during the 2008 WSOP main event was a result of intriguing play and a brutal bad beat, but a pay day of $3,096,768 would eventually relieve some of the disappointment caused by not winning that coveted bracelet. The last few years have been filled with small scores for Montgomery. Two essentially min-cashes in 2009 were followed up by two more this year, but Montgomery would break through in a big way, winning his first bracelet in Event 36, $1,000 no-limit hold 'em.

The fourth $1,000 "stimulus" special of the 2010 WSOP featured 3,102 players and a prize pool of $2.7 million. The first-place prize of $481,760 wasn't anywhere near his main event payout, but this time, the bracelet ensures there is no disappointment.

"I've had like 10 final tables, and I have never had anything in the top three," said Montgomery. "I keep getting fifth and whatever. I started to think I wasn't that good at final tables. It's good to finally get here."

Montgomery became the fourth Canadian to win a bracelet in 2010 following Miguel Proulx, Aadam Daya and Pascal Lefrancois. With the win, he moved into the top-25 of all-time WSOP earnings, forcing Dan Harrington to 26th. The final table included no former WSOP bracelet winners, but did include a rodeo clown, Adam Richardson, who would finish third. Mick Carlson, a 23-year-old student, cashed in a live tournament for the first time and finished second. He earned $297,996.

Here's a look at the highlights of Scott Montgomery's victory in Event 36:

Other notable finishers from Event 36 include Daniel Fuhs (fourth), Peter Traply (14th) and Svetlana Gromenkova (33rd).
