Getzwiller outlasts field of 4,178

In one of the most incredible stories we'll hear about during this year's World Series of Poker, Sean Getzwiller turned his $1,000 investment into $611,185 by winning the 4,178-player Event 8. After the WSOP started the "Stimulus Special" $1,000 buy-in events a few years ago, the fields have been massive, thanks to an influx of casual players heading to Las Vegas to take their shot. Getzwiller battled through the huge field and notched his first WSOP bracelet at his first WSOP final table. He has played at the WSOP for the past three years, with nine cashes in that time.

WSOP.comSean Getzwiller, 33, now has nine WSOP cashes and one WSOP bracelet.

"I feel amazing," he said after his victory. "I mean, I won a bracelet in a 4,000-player event. How much better can I feel? I ran really well. I won a great tournament. If you're going to win a 4,000-player event you've got to feel really good and run really well. I'm just happy that I'm here."

Getzwiller, 33, worked in real estate before turning to poker full-time a few years ago. He recently moved to Las Vegas to play at the live tables as much as possible. Perhaps the toughest part of the experience for Getzwiller was the final table, as he outlasted Sadan Turker in a four-hour heads-up battle for the title. That encounter took place on Day 5 of the event after only three players returned to action.

"I was actually pleading to stop," he said. "We were six-handed and it was 2 in the morning and they wanted us to go another couple hours. It didn't really make a lot of sense. I didn't understand why we had to play down to three people to come here the next day. If we're going to have the final table with all the lights, why move to another table? I really didn't agree with that, but we did it anyway."

After Jon Turner's elimination in third, the British Turker, who entered the final day with the chip lead, was looking for the country's third bracelet in the first 11 events.

"I didn't think it was going to be easy," said Getzwiller of the final table. "We got a lot of chips in play and when we were heads-up we were really deep. [Sadan Turker and I] both had like 80 big blinds, so there was a lot of play and we just lasted four hours. He is a heck of a player."

Turker, 22, a semi-professional poker player from London, is typically an online player. His cash of $377,411 has sparked his interest to play live more often.

Given the size of the field, it was unusual to see so many familiar names and faces. Turner, who finished third, is one of online poker's most well-known players. Under the alias "Pearljammer" or "Pearljammed," Turner has made seven figures in cashes from online tournament action. Max Weinberg finished in fourth, continuing his incredible year. The 21-year-old made the final table at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (seventh), and more recently finished second at the Heartland Poker Tour stop in Michigan before earning his first WSOP cash.

For the third time this WSOP, a woman has made the final table, as Canadian Odette Tremblay finished ninth. During this event there were 172 women in the field, at 4.1 percent of the total, a much higher ratio compared to most tournaments at the WSOP.

Besides the final table and Getzwiller's win, the biggest story out of this event was the 54th-place finish of 2010 World Series of Poker main event champion Jonathan Duhamel. At the 2010 WSOP, '09 champ Joe Cada failed to cash, so Duhamel at least cashed once the year after. Duhamel made a deep run in this event, but fell short of becoming the first defending champion to make a final table since 2006 when Joe Hachem accomplished the feat.

Other notable finishers included David Peters (29th), Eric Mizrachi (50th) and Alexander Kravchenko (177th),
