The World Series of Poker underwent a dramatic transformation Tuesday night. Gone was the quiet lull of the action where all spectators could hear was the cricket-like chirping of chips. The silent, pressure-filled atmosphere was replaced by what seemed to be a party as Brazil's Andre Akkari, one of the most heralded poker players from that country, emerged with the victory in Event 43, a $1,500 no-limit hold 'em event. His fans and friends cheered, chanted and even did the wave to support their man. All around the WSOP, echoes of support for Brazil's best could be heard.

PokerNews/WSOPAndrew Akkari captured his first WSOP bracelet in Event 43 of the 2011 WSOP.

Poker in Brazil continues to boom and he is revered by his country as a public icon. From a global industry perspective, his victory really is a big deal.

"Oh, it's going to be amazing," he said of what his victory might do for poker in Brazil. "You have no idea what is happening in Brazil, right now. Poker is an American sport. It's an American game and maybe the Americans don't know what happens outside the country, but in Brazil, just to give you one idea, I received 1,500 messages a minute on Twitter, it's unbelievable."

Akkari, 36, defeated the field of 2,857 players to become the second Brazilian player in history to win a WSOP bracelet and capture the top prize of $675,117. The husband and father of two from Sao Paulo is also an online poker expert with numerous large cashes on PokerStars. This was Akkari's ninth WSOP cash and first final table, and he's happy to join his friend Alexandre Gomes as a bracelet holder.

"It was unbelievable," he said of Gomes' win. "After he won the bracelet, it changed everything about poker in Brazil. Poker was growing before he won the bracelet, but after that, it was unbelievable. Three million people play poker online and play poker live, it changed everything about poker in Brazil. I was so happy. I was here, rooting for him, and now he is here rooting for me."

Rooting is an interesting word to use as the final table area could have been confused for a soccer match.

"We are a party people," said Akkari. "We like to enjoy life. And have a good time, like this. And anything that includes competition in Brazil is looked like soccer. We root like soccer. Soccer is the main thing in Brazil. Everything is about soccer. Here in poker, it will not be different. It's amazing."

Akkari locked up his first victory by defeating New Yorker Nachman Berlin. The 31-year-old professional poker player was a former landlord who learned to play poker from one of his past tenants, Alan "BodogAri" Engel. This was his second WSOP cash and he earned $419,173.

Other notable finishers include Ryan D'Angelo (36th), Todd Terry (55th) and Dwyte Pilgrim (81st).
