The drop-two list

By Dan Shanoff
Special to Page 2

Baseball owners have voted to drop two teams before the start of next season. Now that the nation's downsizing trend has made its way to baseball towns, Page 2 has taken the "drop-two" concept to other subjects that might need a trim (and we're not afraid to name our two, either):

Page 2's Drop-Two List
Subject   Two to drop   Why

"Friends"
Joey, Phoebe   The other four are with each other.
NCAA Tournament seeds   No. 65, No. 16 (East)   They're just gonna lose to Duke anyway.

'N Sync
Lance Bass, Joey Fatone   Budding movie careers, and they don't sing anyway.
Harry Potter posse   Hermoine Granger, Ron Weasley   Sidekicks don't sell movie tix.
Fall TV lineup   "Emeril," "Inside Schwartz"   Equally terrible plot vehicles.
"Gilligan's Island"   Mrs. Howell, the Skipper   Money, food sponges.
Ballpark giveaways   Schedule magnets, "tankards"   Make way for more bobbleheads in '02.
The Jackson 5   Marlon, Randy   Lack of quality solo efforts.
"The Sopranos"   Hmmm...   Do a pretty good job with the whole "eliminating" thing on their own.
NBA Top 50   Rick Barry, Scottie Pippen   General surliness.
"The Facts of Life"   Cloris Leachman, McKenzie Astin characters   Couldn't possibly cut Jo, Nat, Blair or Tootie.
Destiny's Child   The Other Two Who Aren't Beyonce   Because we can't even name the Other Two.
Olympic events   Curling, closing ceremonies   No one's watching.
Led Zeppelin   John Bonham, John Paul Jones   Come on -- it was a two-man group.
Chicago Cubs double-play combo   Tinker, Evers   "Chance" is the one with the most rhyme potential.
The "Star Trek" cast   Sulu, Chekhov   Who needs helmsmen in a recession?
"The Brady Bunch"   Cindy, Oliver   Nobody likes a tattler -- or a jinx.
NBA rules   Palming, over-the-back   Counterweight to new zone rules.
"West Wing"   Bald speechwriter, Sam's new love interest   They feel forced.
Original Dream Teamers   Christian Laettner, Clyde Drexler   Laettner should have never been there in the first place; Glide was one-dimensional.
"Family Ties"   Meredith Baxter-Birney, Brian Bonsall   Did you think we'd drop Skippy Handelman?
"Rocky" franchise   IV, V   Sports Guy would agree, too.
College football conferences   WAC, Mountain West   No more BCS whining.
Holidays   Arbor Day, Sweetest Day   You should celebrate trees everyday. And it's a Valentine's Day knock-off.

Late-night TV hosts
Jay Leno, Craig Kilborn   Did you think we'd say Charlie Rose?
Office pop-machine offerings   Mello Yello, Mr. Pibb   What flavors exactly were they supposed to be?
College football awards   Davey O'Brien, Maxwell   Aren't these covered by Heisman?
Ancillary "Simpsons" characters   Patty and Selma Bouvier   They started it with Maude Flanders.
Sons of Rick Barry   Scooter, Drew   Jon and Brent have NBA jobs.
