Prime Minister to attend Blake's funeral |
|
| WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Prime Minister Helen Clark will
fly to England to attend the funeral of slain yachtsman Sir Peter
Blake.
The funeral for Blake, murdered last week on the Amazon River in
Brazil by pirates who boarded his yacht and robbed the crew, will
take place Friday in the village of Emsworth, where he lived for 20
years.
Clark, who described Blake as a national hero, visited him on
his yacht on the Amazon three weeks ago.
Blake is best known as the skipper of the New Zealand yacht
which won the America's Cup in 1995, and as the syndicate leader
who organized last year's first successful defense of the cup
outside the United States.
A memorial service for Blake will be held in Auckland shortly
before Christmas. His wife and two children are expected to attend. -- The Associated Press |
