BEDRICHOV, Czech Republic -- Bill Demong of the United States won a Nordic Combined World Cup competition Sunday, finishing the 15-kilometer cross-country race in 42 minutes, 48.5 seconds.

Demong, fourth in Saturday's jumping event, went into the race 1:11 behind leader Thorsten Schmitt of Germany.

Pavel Churavy of the Czech Republic, ninth in the jumping Saturday, finished second Sunday, 1.9 seconds behind Demong.

Felix Gottwald of Austria, the overall World Cup standings leader, was third, 3.8 seconds off Demong's pace.

Nine German and three Finish competitors didn't participate in Sunday's skiing portion of the event after withdrawing Saturday, citing "unfair conditions."
