Peterson added to U.S. Olympic team

PARK CITY, Utah -- Aerialist Jeret "Speedy" Peterson was added to the U.S. Olympic team Monday to replace injured Emily Cook.

Cook, the defending U.S. aerials champion, withdrew Friday after doctors determined she wouldn't be able to compete in the games because of an injury to her right foot.

Under selection rules, coaches had to replace Cook with the next-best aerialist under the selection criteria. Peterson's fourth-place finish in a World Cup event Jan. 18 earned him the Olympic spot.

"I've got some mixed emotions -- disappointed that Emily can't go but certainly pleased I'm going to the games," said Peterson, of Boise, Idaho. "This isn't the way I wanted it to be, but now I have the opportunity."

Peterson's addition means the United States has four men, including 1998 gold medalist Eric Bergoust, on the aerials team, but only two women, Brenda Petzold and Tracy Evans.
