Here's what Kobe Bryant did with the basketball the first 10 times he touched it during the Lakers' victory over the Knicks last Thursday:
1: Kobe reverses the ball and cuts sharply to the weak side, which eventually opens a space for Shaq, who nails a short push-shot.
2: Bryant's second touch results in a hasty, forced jumper that sprongs off the rim and bounces out.
3: Another reversal pass and cut opposite, producing a good look for Samaki Walker, who misses a makeable jump hook.
4: Drives around a solid pick from Shaq, plunges to the middle and draws a non-shooting foul. (Bryant also makes a significant play without the ball -- setting a stern
pick, then flashing to the low post, before vacating the pivot and allowing Shaq to replace him, catch a pass, and score again.)
5: In a break situation, Bryant ventures hoopward, but instead of forcing the action, he pulls the ball back out and properly initiates the offense.
6: Comes hard off another pick by Shaq, then tosses a pass to Fisher, who relays the ball to Rick Fox, who cans a 3-ball. The pass that leads to an assist is not recorded in any scorebook, is never emphasized
in game highlights, but is treasured by Bryant's teammates and coaches.
7: Works still another S/R with Shaq and dumps a neat pass, but Shaq's cut is too late and the ball bounces out of bounds. Here, Bryant makes the right play, yet is discredited with a turnover.
8: Carries the ball over the time line, and when his defender (Latrell Sprewell) sags back into the middle, Bryant bags a long jumper.
9: Delivers a nifty pass inside to Shaq, who's fouled and hits 2-for-2 from the line.
10: Executes another perfect pass, this time to Walker, who bricks another jump hook.
