Joey Torres, a convicted murderer and one-time light-heavyweight boxer, is a key figure in the federal probe looking into alleged corruption in the fight game, The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Torres used his connections to vouch for a law enforcement agent posing as his cousin, a prosecutor told the newspaper on Wednesday. Torres introduced the agent, known as "Big Frankie," to major Las Vegas boxing officials, including officials at Bob Arum's Top Rank organization, sources told the Times.
Torres is currently in Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles, in custody on a criminal matter unrelated to the current probe. His relatives and attorney say they fear for his safety.
"Right now, my brother's a sitting duck," Marcy Bautista told the Times on Wednesday. "The other inmates think he's a rat, an informant."
Torres had been serving 25 years to life in the murder of his former manager. He began working with authorities during a time when he was out on bail while challenging his 1979 murder conviction. The sentence was eventually upheld.
