• Ranger defenseman Michal Rozsival, one of the team's steadiest defenders, left the game late in the first period with a leg injury and did not return. Rangers coach Tom Renney said he was day-to-day.
• The Rangers took 12 minutes worth of penalties compared to the Sabres' four minutes through two periods. Most of the penalties were fouls that came in response to the Sabres' speed, and offensive pressure generated by that speed.
"The thinking process seemed to go south beyond that and it is about the little things in the game. Buffalo clearly demonstrated how to do that [Wednesday night]," Renney said.
For the Rangers to get back in the series, they'll have to find a way to get them out of that groove again.
"We want to stay away from the track meet," Renney added. "They're just too quick. They're transition game is excellent, naturally, and they can score from any number of locations in their lineup. We've just got to be a little more intelligent team."
• The Rangers had a number of sterling scoring chances early, including one by Jaromir Jagr off a sweet Michael Nylander pass 28 seconds into Game 1. But Buffalo netminder Ryan Miller was stellar. Asked whether he thought an early goal might have changed the complexion of the game, Jagr was emphatic it wouldn't have. "This is a hockey game, not a soccer game," he said. "What, do you think we're going to shut them down for 60 minutes?"
• After threatening in the New York papers to "hurt" the Sabres, Sean Avery was naturally booed by the sellout crowd. His night included two minor penalties, three shots and four hits. He played 18:04 and was minus-3.
• The Sabres breathed a sigh of relief with their Game 1 victory. They are 1-13 when they lose Game 1 of a best-of-seven playoff series.
• During the lengthy video review of a Jason Pominville goal or no-goal with 6:13 left in the third, Canadian network TSN went to a shot of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who was on hand for the game. We wished he'd given the "goal" or "no goal" signal or even danced a little jig, a la Jeremy Roenick, just for fun. But, alas, he didn't.
• The Sabres announced their 45th consecutive sellout of the season. Hard to believe this is a team that was bankrupt and in danger of leaving town not so many years ago.
