Phillies: 'No substance' to Manny talk

Manny Ramirez to the Phillies? The New York Post reported Sunday that the Red Sox view the Phillies as "the best fit" for a potential Manny deal before the deadline. But the Phillies seem to differ.

One Phillies official told there was "no substance whatsoever" to that Manny talk. And although the Phillies have done some bat shopping (losing out on both Casey Blake and Xavier Nady), they're mostly focused on pitching. And they would be in the market only for a hitter who could play right field.

The Phillies remain interested in both Brian Fuentes and George Sherrill, as well as a number of left-handed set-up men (Jack Taschner, John Grabow, etc.). But they might not make a trade until the August waiver period, while they try to assess Brett Myers' comeback and Joe Blanton's impact on their rotation. If neither goes as planned, they may opt to shift course and deal for a starter next month.
