Byrd likely to stay put

The Indians have had some hits on veteran pitcher Paul Byrd, but with 2½ hours before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, it appears unlikely he'll be traded.

Byrd could be the classic example of someone who might be traded in August. Because Byrd is making $7.5 million this season and will be owed about $2.5 million for the rest of the year, teams might be reluctant to pick him up on waivers because of his 2008 performance: He is 5-10 with a 4.93 ERA so far. But his experience and past record might make him attractive to a team that's looking for a starter next month. Of course, like with all players: All it takes is one phone call to arrange a deal.
