Sunday, December 7, 2008 Updated: December 8, 1:37 PM ET Jermaine Dye trade rumors have been all over the place for a while, but Hal McCoy, longtime baseball writer for the Dayton Daily News, took the speculation a step further Sunday when he quoted a Major League Baseball source as saying a Dye-for-Homer Bailey trade between the White Sox and Cincinnati is "done and will be announced this week.''
If that's the case, Dye and his representatives haven't heard a word about it yet. Dye has a limited no-trade clause that allows him to veto deals to six teams. Cincinnati isn't on his list, so the White Sox wouldn't have to get his permission for a trade to the Reds to go through. But if this deal were close, it's likely GM Kenny Williams would keep Dye and his agent in the loop strictly as a courtesy to a veteran player.
The White Sox have already traded Nick Swisher and Javier Vazquez this winter. On Thursday, Williams told Chicago reporters that he's now in more of a listening mode than an aggressive one. "If I had to guess as I sit here right now, I don't foresee any other movement with veteran players,'' he said.
