Royals among teams in mix for Furcal
A deal for free agent Rafael Furcal has an outside shot at being completed before the general managers start fleeing Las Vegas on Thursday morning.
Kansas City is working to come up with the money, and the A's are back in, as are the Dodgers and Toronto. The Royals also have been talking to Orlando Cabrera. The most likely Furcal timeline is Friday to Monday, but then, as one GM said Tuesday night, "If we weren't here, a lot more could get done."
• One Padres official Tuesday night said, "I feel a lot more confident about the Jake Peavy deal tonight than yesterday." Jim Hendry has worked hard to involve a third and fourth team to get San Diego what it needs, and will have to move money (Jason Marquis and maybe even the invaluable Mark DeRosa) to make it happen.
Can it happen here? "Not likely," said the Padres official, "but possible."
• It is a near certainty that the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes will move on into next week, at the earliest. Nothing will happen with CC Sabathia until next week, again at the earliest. Sabathia is going to meet with the Giants, and if Teixeira leaves the Angels, the Angels will be players.
• The Dodgers are not doing a Matt Kemp-Robinson Cano deal. "We're not trading any of our young guys," Ned Colletti says.
• The Marlins' payroll came in a little better than expected, so other than moving catcher Matt Treanor, the Phish don't have to move anyone. So unless they get blown away by a Jeremy Hermida offer, he will stay in Florida.
