Catfish Hunter pitched in 22 postseason games and went 9-6 with a 3.26 ERA. In the seven World Series games he pitched in from 1972-74, when the A's won three straight championships, Hunter was 4-0 with one save and a 2.19 ERA. Here were his biggest games:
1973 World Series, Game 6: The A's trailed the underdog Mets 3 games to 2 when Hunter faced Tom Seaver. Catfish allowed one run in 7.1 innings as the A's won 3-1. Oakland won Game 7 5-2 behind homers from Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson.
1973 ALCS, Game 5: Hunter fanned just one batter, but pitched a five-hit shutout as the A's beat the Orioles 3-0 to advance to the World Series.
1978 World Series, Game 6: Hunter had struggled through injuries in 1978 and had lost Game 2. But he limited the Dodgers to two runs in seven innings as the Yankees captured the Series with a 7-2 victory.
1972 World Series, Game 2: In baseball's forgotten classic World Series (six of the seven games were decided by one run), Hunter won the second game 2-1. He had a shutout until the ninth but needed last-out help from Rollie Fingers. The A's won Game 7 3-2 with Hunter picking up the win in relief of Blue Moon Odom.
1974 World Series, Game 3: Playing the Dodgers, the Series was tied at a game apiece with Hunter getting the final out in Oakland's 3-2 victory in Game 1. He started Game 3 and allowed one run in 7.1 innings as the A's won 3-2. They won in five games.
1976 ALCS, Game 1: The Yankees returned to the postseason for the first time since 1964. Hunter pitched the opener and beat the Royals 4-1, tossing a five-hitter.
And one more ...
May 8, 1968: Hunter, 22, tossed the eighth perfect game in major league history, blanking the Twins 4-0. He struck out 11 and went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
