1. 1902 was the first year the Tournament of Roses Football game was played.

2. Stanford played Michigan in the first game, losing 0-49.

3. This terrible first game blowout caused the tournament to give up football in favor of Roman-style chariot races.

4. The tradition of playing a football game during the tournament began again in 1916.

5. The nickname, "Rose Bowl," started in 1923.

6. The Rose Bowl has been a sell-out every year since 1947.

7. The 1947 Rose Bowl was the first game played under the Tournament's exclusive agreement with the Big Ten and Pacific Coast Conferences.

8. The original stadium held 57,000 fans.

9. The current seating capacity is 93,000.

10. In 1973, stadium space was found to hold a record 106,869 fans.
