AKRON, Ohio -- Goodyear blimps have now been flying for 80 years.
The blimp has appeared on telecasts of nearly every major sports event, including the Olympics, Super Bowl, World Series, U.S. Open golf and tennis, NASCAR and the NBA, as well as college football, soccer and horse racing.
The first Goodyear promotional blimp named Pilgrim was launched June 3, 1925, from Akron. Today, Goodyear has four blimps -- three in the U.S. and one in Brazil.
A Goodyear blimp provided the first, live high-definition broadcast from a blimp in August 2004 for a telecast of the NFL Hall of Fame game.
