Get in tune with A.J. Pierzynski
Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski recently spoke with ESPN.com about his musical tastes and preferences.
ESPN.com: What are your three favorite songs on your iPod?
Pierzynski: Oh, man. Anything by Jimmy Buffett is No. 1. Without a doubt, it always puts me in a good mood and makes me think about going home to Florida. So I don't know if that incorporates all three. Probably Creed; I'm a big Creed guy, I know a bunch of those guys, so I listen to their music all the time. Those are probably my two biggest in my iPod that I listen to all the time. They usually put me in a good mood, get me going.
ESPN.com: Do you remember your first concert and who was it?
Pierzynski: I'm not telling you who my first concert was, it's way too embarrassing.
ESPN.com: Come on, you've got to, you've got to. … Please.
Pierzynski: You might not have even been born when I went. It was … I can't even say. It was Vanilla Ice …
Pierzynski: Jodeci and MC Hammer.
ESPN.com: That is fantastic. Absolutely amazing.
Pierzynski: I'm embarrassed to even admit that, but yeah, it was. The Sun Dome in Tampa.
ESPN.com: Say you're on "American Idol," what song are you gonna sing that's gonna get you to Hollywood?
Pierzynski: I can't sing a lick. So there's not one song I can sing that would get me to Hollywood. Man, I can't even do "Happy Birthday," so I'm in trouble. If they ever asked me to be on "American Idol," I'm just going to have to kiss up to Paula [Abdul, who since has left the show] and hope she likes me.
ESPN.com: I'm sure she would.
Pierzynski: Simon's a little rough, though.
ESPN.com: He can be, he can be. All right, next question. If you were to go on tour with any group, singer, band, who would it be?
Pierzynski: Jimmy Buffett. Just because his concerts are so much fun. People tailgate for him for hours, they bring their boats, they bring sand, they bring everything. So it's awesome. He has the best concerts. Everyone knows every word to every song, they all sing along, it's great.
ESPN.com: Now, I know you didn't sing your whole life, but did you play any instruments?
Pierzynski: Never. I can't play anything, can't play anything, nope. I'm kind of jealous my half brother can play guitar really well, so I'm jealous that he can play something I can't.
ESPN.com: That's a talent you could take up, though.
Pierzynski: I don't know. I don't have any musical talent in me, though, so it's tough. I mean, you've got to have a little bit of rhythm or a little bit of something to be able to do that. And I don't have any of that. I'm not even good at "Guitar Hero."
ESPN.com: Now, at-bat music. How important is that to you, and what song do you come out to?
Pierzynski: Um, I never really picked a song until recently. I was coming out to this song by Kurtis Blow, it's called the "AJ Scratch." And it's like from the early '80s, and it just said "A.J." over and over again. And there wasn't any hits in it, so I switched. And I went to "Bullets" by Creed, and I started hitting. It never really mattered to me before, but for some reason I made a switch, and it worked out.
ESPN.com: Good-luck stuff.
Pierzynski: I guess. I don't know. I don't think it really matters what you come up to, but some people really [think it's] important.
ESPN.com: Now, I'm gonna have two different categories, you tell me which you like. OK, Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift?
Pierzynski: Carrie Underwood. She's more of my age demographics than Taylor Swift. She's a little young for me.
ESPN.com: All right, the early, happy "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" Beatles or the later, trippy "I Am The Walrus" Beatles?
Pierzynski: The early Beatles, the early Beatles. The other ones I don't really get. The early stuff was good.
ESPN.com: Jay-Z or Lil Wayne?
Pierzynski: (Laughs) I'm not really into the hip-hop thing, but I guess I'll go Jay-Z.
ESPN.com: And the last one, Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth?
Pierzynski: David Lee Roth. No doubt. Yeah, I mean, Sammy was OK with Van Halen, but David Lee Roth, "California Girls," "Jump," it's hard to beat some of those songs.
