Long Beach tries to spike competition

Long Beach Wilson high school was ... ranked No. 1 in high school baseball after winning the [2007] state title.

dgriffith25: Ranked No. 1 high school athletics program in the nation by Sports Illustrated in 2005, [the school has] shown an extreme level of dominance unknown to the common high school sports fan in multiple sports such as football, track and field, golf, tennis, cross-country and badminton.

[In 1992 and 1993] the Long Beach Little League team won the World Series two years in a row, led by Sean Burroughs.

Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson high schools have consistently been the top prep schools in the nation in track and field as demonstrated by the two female teams dominating the Penn Relays, breaking and setting national records in major relays.

The same two teams have had success on a national level with the boys also establishing themselves in national competition.

The Long Beach State college baseball team has, over the years, been consistently ranked in the top 20 each year as well as this year. They have been invited to the college [playoffs] consistently over the past five to eight years and even played in the College World Series on [four] occasions.

The Long Beach State men's volleyball team plays in the toughest league in volleyball and is normally ranked in the top 20 on a consistent basis.

The Long Beach State women's volleyball team is always ranked in the top 20 and has produced several national players of the year including [Olympic gold medalist] Misty May who is currently one of the top players in the country.

The Poly high girls basketball team has won the California state championship three years in a row in the top division in the state.
