Beuerlein and Gold face off in training camp

Updated: July 31, 2003, 9:29 PM ET

DENVER -- Denver Broncos linebacker Ian Gold took a swipe at backup quarterback Steve Beuerlein's right elbow during a drill in training camp on Thursday, prompting Beuerlein to get into Gold's face.

"If somebody does something I think was wrong -- and that was flat-out wrong, what he did -- I will respond," Beuerlein said. "You're not supposed to come by and grab a quarterback's arm like that."

Gold, a fourth-year linebacker, acknowledged he was in the wrong but said Beuerlein is supposed to be tough.

"Steve made a good point. I shouldn't have taken a swipe at his hand," Gold said. "But he's a quarterback, he's supposed to be tough, and I think Steve is going to go soft in his old age."

Beuerlein was sidelined for the 2001 season after having surgery on his right elbow.

Beuerlein has previously confronted teammates in training camp, once exchanging words with 334-pound defensive tackle Chester McGlockton.

"I'm old school and I have always been accused of being dumber than I look as far as who I pick my fights with," the 220-pound Beuerlein said.

"It's just my emotions, and my first reaction is to attack. He (Gold) apologized to me and we're all straight."

^RING OF FAME:@ Former offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman has been elected to the Broncos Ring of Fame. The selection committee -- owner Pat Bowlen, two former team officials and Larry Zimmer of KOA-AM -- voted unanimously to make Zimmerman the 19th member of the ring.

The formal induction will be Sept. 28 when Denver hosts the Detroit Lions. Zimmerman played only five seasons with the Broncos in a 12-year NFL career.

"I was surprised," Zimmerman said. "I didn't expect to make it this quickly because I didn't play that long with the team."

Zimmerman was named to two NFL all-decade teams and made the first or second All-Pro teams eight times.
