WASHINGTON -- Milt Newton, who has spent the last three years working in the NBA's developmental league, was hired Thursday as director of player personnel for the Washington Wizards.

Newton had been director of player personnel for the National Basketball Development League. He previously was an assistant director for the U.S. men's basketball program.

Newton attended high school in Washington and was a member of the NCAA champion Kansas team in 1988. He later played for the Rockford Lightning and the Grand Rapids Hoops in the Continental Basketball Association.

He replaces Fred Whitfield, who resigned in May.
