Brackets announced for 20th Maui Invitational
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Division II Chaminade will try to end a 30-game losing streak in the tournament it hosts against Villanova in the opening round of the 20th Maui Invitational in November.
The other first-round pairings in the event to be held Nov. 24-26 have Ohio State against San Diego State, Santa Clara facing Hawaii and Central Michigan against Dayton.
The brackets, announced Friday, have the Villanova-Chaminade winner playing the Santa Clara-Hawaii winner in the semifinals.
Chaminade, which pulled off one of college basketball's biggest upsets ever with a victory over No. 1-ranked Virginia and Ralph Sampson on Dec. 23, 1982, has a 3-52 record in the Maui Invitational, including the 30 consecutive losses. The Silverswords' last win was over Stanford in the seventh-place game in 1992.
Villanova won the Maui Invitational in 1995, beating Santa Clara in the semifinals after the Broncos upset defending national champion UCLA in the opening round.
Dayton finished third in the 2000 Maui Invitational, beating No. 12 Connecticut in the opening round, losing to No. 1 Arizona in the semifinals and beating No. 6 Maryland in the third-place game.
The tournament, sponsored by EA Sports, is played in the 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center.
