LOS ANGELES -- Marvin Menzies, a former assistant coach at San Diego State, was hired in the same capacity by Southern California men's basketball coach Henry Bibby on Wednesday.

Menzies spent four years at San Diego State, where he helped the Aztecs reached the postseason the last two years. He also worked as the head recruiter.

"Marvin comes to us with a reputation as a great recruiter, but he's also a great X's and O's coach," Bibby said. "He and new assistant Mike Johnson will work to improve our defense."

Menzies, 41, was head coach at Santa Monica City College from 1997-99. The previous six seasons he was on the junior college's basketball staff that sent 38 players to NCAA schools.

Menzies also had stints at Cal State Sacramento and Hamilton High in Los Angeles. He graduated from UCLA.
