Glenn pronounces Pokes ready to rumble
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Head coach Joe Glenn pronounced the Cowboys ready for action after the team's final tune-up scrimmage Thursday.
Wyoming scrimmaged for some 50 plays in War Memorial Stadium. Glenn, who is entering his first season at Wyoming, said he saw "a little bit of good everywhere" -- especially in the starters.
"I also thought the kicking game was extremely impressive," he said.
Kicker Deric Yaussi, a sophomore, booted a 54-yard field goal with distance to spare and was two-for-two on extra points. Luke Donovan, a senior, averaged 46.6 yards per punt and a hang time of 4.97 seconds.
Two of Donovan's punts kept aloft for 5.15 and 5.23 seconds.
"Those numbers are Twilight Zone," Glenn said. "That punter looks like NFL material to me."
But he said improvement is still needed in a couple areas. "We continue to miss on the deep passes," he said, "and I look forward to us improving in that area."
While the offense prevailed in the red zone, converting three touchdowns and a field goal on four possessions from the 20 yard line, the defense forced six punts in action farther from the goal line. The defense allowed 173 total yards, including just 12 yards on the ground.
Freshman corner Terrel Vinson snagged an errant pass and raced 71 yards for a touchdown.
"I thought the defense applied some pressure on the quarterback and made some big plays," Glenn said. "Yet big players made big plays for us offensively in the red zone, and that's important."
The Cowboys scored three touchdowns during the hour-long scrimmage, all on pass plays from the quarterback brothers Casey and Corey Bramlet, of Wheatland.
Casey Bramlet was 6 of 10 for 74 yards; Corey Brmalet was likewise 6 of 10 for 57 yards.
Friday's final two-a-day session will include a walk-through in the morning and a practice in the afternoon. Saturday's workout, in War Memorial Stadium, will include a small scrimmage with the No. 1 units playing against the Montana State scout team.
