Texas A&M names Lance Irvin assistant men's basketball coach
HOUSTON -- Lance Irvin, a former assistant coach at Illinois State, has been named to the staff at Texas A&M, coach Melvin Watkins announced Wednesday.
Former Dallas Carter High School coach Rob Wright previously had been named as an assistant coach but had to withdraw because of medical reasons.
Irvin, 34, a Chicago native, has also held coaching positions at Iowa State, Loyola of Chicago and DePaul. He played college basketball at Colorado State and Triton Junior College in River Grove, Ill.
"I've known Lance since I recruited him out of high school," said Watkins. "He has a national recruiting reputation and comes highly recommended by the president of Illinois State and by former A&M All-American Sonny Parker. When Sonny called, I knew we had our man."
Irvin replaces Tom Billeter, who left A&M in May to become head coach at Augustana College.
