Sacred Heart 24, St. Peter's 19
JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Pete Athans returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown and Sacred Heart held off a fourth-quarter rally by St. Peter's to defeat the Peacocks 24-19 Saturday night.
Athans' score came midway through the third quarter and gave Sacred Heart a 24-6 lead. Brando Edmonds caught two touchdown passes for St. Peter's in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit, the second with one minute remaining.
The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of the Peacocks' Scott Kochman. It also marred an outstanding performance by quarterback Andre Harris, who threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 137 yards.
Harris completed 25 of 49 passes for 215 yards. St. Peter's outgained Sacred Heart 425-205 in total yardage but had three turnovers.
Sean Mayers got St. Peter's on the board in the first quarter with a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Peacocks a 6-3 lead. Alvin Franklin and Ed Pricolo scored touchdowns for Sacred Heart and Greg Tonzola added a 24-yard field goal.
