Dolphins' Dixon has ankle surgery

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Mark Dixon had surgery on his right ankle Friday and will miss this weekend's game against the New York Giants.

Coach Dave Wannstedt hopes the sixth-year player can return this season.

"We'll see how he reacts after having it cleaned out," Wannstedt said.

Dixon missed the first three games of the season after undergoing the same procedure in August. Rookie Wade Smith has started in his place. Dixon has missed 13 of the Dolphins' past 35 regular-season games with injuries.

Also, Brian Griese will be the Dolphins' third quarterback Sunday. It will be the first time the former Denver starter will be in uniform this season after injuring a toe during preseason.

"The important thing now is that Brian gets his timing back and just gets healthy," Wannstedt said.
