Ark.-Monticello 27, Cent. Arkansas 14
CONWAY, Ark. -- Craig Reed rushed 29 times for 131 yards and a touchdown as Arkansas-Monticello topped Central Arkansas in a Gulf South Conference matchup Saturday night.
The Boll Weevils (2-3, 1-2 GSC) took advantage of four turnovers by UCA (2-3, 0-3) to get the win. UAM scored after three of the turnovers, all in the first half, and led 24-7 at halftime.
The Weevils added a 19-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter before UCA managed another score.
It was the third straight loss for UCA despite having more total offense than UAM -- 409 yards to 330 -- and averaging 5.7 yards per play to 4.7 for UAM. The Boll Weevils, however, turned the ball over just once, and harmlessly, late in the fourth quarter.
UAM quarterback Cory Allred completed 15 of 23 for 141 yards and a TD. When the UAM offense did stall, punter Wes Baker kicked seven times for a 42.7-yard average.
UCA wide receiver Michael Norvell threw his first touchdown pass late in the game. He took a lateral from quarterback Henry Young and hit a wide-open Ben Faires with a 39-yard scoring throw to close the margin to 27-14 with 8:17 left in the game.
But UCA's final three drives all failed to produce points. The win broke a two-game losing streak for UAM.
