Tennessee falls seven spots in USA Today/ESPN coaches poll
MCLEAN, Virginia - Tennessee slipped seven spots and Washington dropped out of the top 25 in the latest USA Today/ESPN football coaches poll released Sunday.
Tennessee (4-1) fell out of the top 10 to No. 14 after a 28-21 loss to Auburn on Saturday, while Washington (3-2) endured a 46-16 defeat to UCLA and plummeted out of the poll from No. 17.
There was no movement among the top-six, although No. 1 Oklahoma (5-0) increased its lead over second-ranked Miami (5-0). The Sooners thrashed Iowa State, 53-7, and earned 53 first-place votes and 1,560 points. They gained the four first-place nods the Hurricanes lost after a come-from-behind 22-20 victory over West Virginia on Thursday.
Defending champion Ohio State (5-0), which was idle, collected six votes for first place and 1,435 points. Virginia Tech (5-0) and Florida State (5-0) completed the first five.
Idle Louisiana State (5-0) remained sixth, ahead of Nebraska (5-0), Arkansas (4-0), Southern California (4-1), Georgia (4-1), Texas (4-1), Washington State (5-1) and Minnesota (6-0).
Iowa (5-1) defeated Michigan, 30-27, and moved four spots to No. 15. Pittsburgh (3-1) rose two places to 16th, while Texas Christian (5-0) routed Army, 27-0, jumped four spots to No. 17. Northern Illinois (5-0) climbed to No. 18.
With its loss to Iowa, the Wolverines (4-2) slid eight spots to 19th, followed by Purdue (4-1) and Kansas State (4-2).
Wisconsin (5-1), Michigan State (5-1), Virginia (4-1) and Oregon State (5-1) entered the poll, while Oregon (4-2), Florida (3-3), and Air Force (5-1) dropped out.
