ABILENE, Texas -- Jordan Neal threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another Saturday as Hardin-Simmons defeated Howard Payne 37-35.
Neal hit Patrick Shelby for touchdown passes of 33 yards in the second quarter and the 18-yard game winner with 12:58 left in the fourth quarter. He also completed a 27-yard TD pass to Matt Epperson to complete a 63-yard drive with 11:46 left in the third quarter.
Neal scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 76-yard drive in the first quarter.
Shelby's fourth-quarter touchdown gave Hardin-Simmons (4-1, 4-0 American Southwest) a 37-28 lead. Howard Payne (2-3, 2-2), which traded touchdowns with Hardin-Simmons throughout the second half, scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Adam King to A.J. Edwards with seven seconds left for the final margin of 37-35.
King threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns in the aerial battle. Neither King nor Neal threw an interception with Neal completing 26 of 43 passes and King hitting 23 of 35.
