BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Harold Wells scored twice while recording 10 tackles on defense as Gardner-Webb rallied to beat Liberty 27-17 on Saturday.
Trailing 17-14 at half, the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-0 Big South) capitalized on a Liberty fumble, driving the ball 49 yards before a Wells 1-yard run to take a 21-17 lead.
The Flames (2-5, 1-1) couldn't deliver the rest of the way as the Bulldog defense forced punts on the next four Liberty drives. The 290-pound nose guard Wells punched it in again from 2 yards out at the 9:52 mark of the fourth quarter.
Nick Roberts completed 16 of 28 passes for a career-high 234 yards and two touchdowns for Gardner-Webb. He also scampered in from 33 yards out h 2:01 before half to put Gardner-Webb ahead 14-3.
Liberty quarterback Gus Condon and receiver Lauren Wiliams connected on a 55-yard pass, setting up a Dre Barnes 1-yard TD run with 30 seconds left. On the ensuing kickoff, Austin Gaines fumbled at the Gardner-Webb 23. Three plays later, Condon hit Williams from 11 yards, and it was Liberty 17-14 with 3 seconds before the break.
Barnes led the Liberty rushing attack with 28 carries for 147 yards. Chris Foster rushed for 121 yards for Gardner-Webb, which won its 13th straight at home.
