AKRON, Ohio -- Charlie Frye passed for 195 yards and four touchdowns to lead Akron to a 45-14 win over Cal Poly-SLO on Saturday night.
Matt Cherry caught a 20-yard TD pass from Frye and returned a punt 76 yards for another score to give the Zips (4-3) a 28-14 lead with 4:00 to play in the second quarter.
About two minutes earlier, Jerrel Ringer scored on a 2-yard TD run to make it 21-14, giving Akron the lead for good. Ringer rushed for 167 yards on 20 carries.
John Mende completed 7 of 23 passes for 128 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Cal-Poly (3-3). He scored on a 12-yard run and threw a 25-yard TD pass to Anthony Randolph to tie it 14-all in the second.
