Williams' 3-second score is fastest on record
IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Randal Williams' 37-yard return of an onside kick three seconds into Sunday's 23-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles is the fastest score to start a game since the NFL began using a scoreboard clock in 1970.
Williams was on the front line of the Cowboys' return team when the Eagles tried the onside kick. He plucked the ball out of the air and wasn't touched as he raced to the end zone.
He said special teams coach Bruce DeHaven warned him an onside kick might be coming.
"We practice onside kicks all week, but when I came down on two feet, I saw nothing but green and said, 'Why not?" he said.
It was also the shortest return for a touchdown since Henry Jones of Buffalo went the same distance in 1999.
The Eagles successfully recovered an onside kick to start their 41-14 season-opening victory over Dallas in 2000.
