DEKALB, Illinois - Northern Illinois will have to continue its quest for an undefeated season without its defensive leader.

Linebacker and co-captain Nick Duffy will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his right ankle Monday.

Duffy, whose 339 career tackles ranks 12th on Northern Illinois' all-time list, will have his string of 29 straight starts snapped.

"Nick Duffy is one of our team captains, one of our emotional leaders on defense," Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak said. "Not only do we lose some toughness in our defense, we lose some great leadership."

The Huskies (6-0) got some good news regarding quarterback Josh Haldi, who will start Saturday's game against Western Michigan after getting knocked out of last week's game against Central Michigan with a mild concussion.
