Miami's Taylor has shoulder surgery

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami safety Sean Taylor will miss Saturday's game against Temple after having minor shoulder surgery.

Taylor had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Monday, but should be ready for a Big East showdown against No. 3 Virginia Tech on Nov. 1 because the second-ranked Hurricanes have a week off after playing the Owls.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior is tied for the national lead with six interceptions. He picked off two passes against Florida State last Saturday -- including one he returned 50 yards for a touchdown -- and knocked down several more. He also earned Big East defensive player of the week honors.

"From what I saw, he might have been defensive player of the world," coach Larry Coker said Tuesday. "He had a phenomenal day."

Without Taylor, sophomore Greg Threat will make his second consecutive start. Threat filled in for Maurice Sikes against the Seminoles and played well. Sikes, who sat out with a sprained right knee, is expected to play Saturday.

"That's going to be a huge plus for us," Coker said. "And with Brandon Meriweather and Greg Threat, we're going to be fine there."

The Hurricanes also will be without receiver Roscoe Parrish on Saturday.

Parrish was released from a Tallahassee hospital Monday, two days after a brutal hit caused internal bleeding.

Parrish spent two nights at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital after Florida State cornerback Stanford Samuels knocked him to the ground on a crossing route in the second quarter. Coker called the play a clean hit.

Coker said he sent a letter to FSU president T.K. Wetherell, thanking him for the support Parrish received from the Seminoles. Florida State coaches called to check on Parrish, and the team trainer visited him in the hospital.

Parrish's injuries have not been specified, but bruising to his internal organs was the initial concern. Coker said he expects Parrish to play again this season.
